Make your beanie. You can use your choice of fabric to show off your style and choose a suitable texture. Polar fleece is a good choice for creating a cozy, warm, and cuddly polar fleece beanie. We used this to make our beanie.

This project will suit both beginner and advanced sewists. Use your sewing machine to make a DIY hat. We are going to knit stretchy fabric and traditional settings for sewing machines won’t be able to handle it. It is not a good idea to make bursting stitches.

First, insert a stretch or a ballpoint needle with a rounded tip. It is worth looking at if you need help figuring out what to do. Second, use a stretch stitch to sew on your machine. This Stitch I have is sometimes called a “lightning stitch” on my machine.

Third, pick a suitable thread. Turn the beanie by sewing the seam. Seam allowances should be 3/8 inches. Only sew on pins after you are finished sewing; iron carefully. Let’s discuss how to sew a beanie hat.

How to Sew Beanies: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to sew a beanie hat? Beanies are a comfortable accessory that can be worn at all times of the year. They can keep your head warm and add style to your outfit. You can make your beanie by sewing it. It’s easy to create a custom-made beanie for your head with just a few simple steps. Here are the steps to sew a beanie.

Materials you’ll want:

  • Fabric
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Beanie pattern or template

Step 1 – Prepare the Fabric

You will need to choose a suitable fabric for your beanie. For beanies, knit or fleece fabric is the best choice. Cut a piece that measures 18 inches in width by 12 inches in height. You will need enough material to make one beanie.

Step 2 – Cut the Fabric

Cutting the Fabric for Beanie-Hat

Fold the fabric in half longwise with the right side facing out. Pin the edges together.

Step 3 – Sew the Fabric

Your sewing machine will be used to join the two pieces. It would help if you left the top- and bottom edges unfinished. Use a straight seam and leave a 1/4 inch allowance.

Step 4: Hem Bottom Edge

Fold the beanie’s bottom by 1/2 inch. Then pin it in position. You will sew the hem with a straight stitch.

Step 5: Create the Top Seam

Fold down the top edge and pin it in position. The border should be sewn using a straight stitch.

Step 6 – Finish the Beanie

Turn the beanie on its side, and you’re done. You can decorate the beanie with a pom-pom or other accessories if you’d like.

Step 7: Create a Beanie Pattern

To make your beanie, you don’t need a pattern. You can use cardboard or paper to create one. Draw a rectangle approximately 18 inches across and 12 inches long. Draw a curved line along one side of this rectangle. This will become the top edge. You can use the pattern to help you cut your fabric.

Tips and Tricks
  • Use a stretch sewing needle for knitting or making fleece fabric.
  • Try sewing a scrap piece of fabric first before making your beanie.
  • A lining can be added to your beanie to add warmth.
  • Try out different fabric colors and textures to create unique beanies.

Fancy Beanie with Gathers

You chose a different fabric for my second beanie. It was the same base pattern. This is the sparkly knit fabric I found! Although I’m not sure what the name is, it has a smooth inside and a rough outside. It drapes well.

There were many options. The back is finished as is. Add a notch around the edge of the side seam curve. Gathers require you to add volume to the seam using the slash-and-spread method. Begin by drawing three lines as shown. Each section should be extended by 3 cm (1 1/8″), and the lines should be redrawn. It’s a good idea for the seam to be rounded.

For the lining, the basic beanie can still be used as is. But take 2cm (3/4’’) off the hemline. This will allow the lining to be slightly shorter and conceal the seam. These are the final pattern pieces. You’ll need to cut two parts of the primary layer. However, the back piece can be engraved on the fold. This will avoid the back seam.

Once you are done cutting, press the seams closed. Then, sew, gathering stitches in the seam between the marked notches. Make sure you measure your target size. If you need to remember the target measurement, you can compare the front seam length with the back seam, as they are identical.

Close the back seam as well. Sew the front of the beanie together at the side seams. Make the beanie lining by sewing it as usual. Start at the side seams “darts,” then close the c/front darts. The leading layer and the liner will be joined together at the hemline.

Then, place the main layers over the lining pieces, right sides together. Before you start stitching, pin the hemlines. To turn the right side out, leave a little gap at the back. Once you’ve done that, close the hole by hand stitching and join the lining with the primary layer. Here is a view of how the lining extends higher and remains hidden within the beanie.
